where the fall colors are |
Driving up north via I-75, you'll find beautiful foliage along the highway around 200-250 miles going up and down through the hills, might take some stress out of your shoulder on the long way to upper peninsula. But if you're dring at night, too bad.

Bay City is a good place to stop during the long drive, about 2 hours from Ann Arbor and 3 hours to Mackinaw City. There's a place called Cracked Egg serves delicious omelette and fritatas (italian omelette), probably better than the Angelo's. Great for brunch if you head out early. For some extra money, you can go to the O Sole Mio, an italian restaurant, for dinner, on your wayback most likely.

Blazing fall colors can also be found along the M-123 going to the Tahquamenon falls. if you dont mind driving a bit more, along M-123 from Tahquamenon to Newberry is at its peak.

For those going to Pictured Rocks, take US-2 to Manistique and go north on M-94. There's much more to see than the plains of M-28. If you have time, check out the Big Spring in the Indian Lake State Park near Manistique.

The cruise for Pictured Rocks has ended for this year, but you can still go on to the cliff for the Miner's Castle.

Another interesting place is the Twelve Mile Beach. As the name says, it's a narrow strip of white sand extends for 12 miles, just north of the Pictured Rocks. You can drive to the Little Beaver camp site and walk the 1.5 mile trail to get to the Lake Superior shore. i don't think you wanna get in the water though :)
